Virginia Businesses: File Unclaimed Property Report By Nov. 1
October 02, 2026
Attention Virginia CPAs: Remind your clients or corporate employers to report unclaimed property by Nov. 1, 2026.
The Virginia Department of the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Program safeguards citizens’ property rights and ensures compliance with the Unclaimed Property Act. This program helps relieve businesses of liability and record-keeping duties while working to reconnect citizens with assets escheated to the Commonwealth.
Since its inception, the program has successfully returned over $1.3 billion in unclaimed property.
Legal and commercial entities, including corporations and government bodies, must report unclaimed property. Unclaimed property includes dormant accounts deemed abandoned under the Unclaimed Property Act, such as uncashed checks, inactive bank accounts, stocks, and safe deposit box contents.
Reporting unclaimed property is mandatory and must be done annually, as businesses act as custodians and cannot keep the property as revenue; failure to report can lead to penalties.
Insurance companies must file by May 1, while most businesses have a deadline of November 1. Virginia Treasury simplifies the reporting process through its website, www.vamoneysearch.gov.
The facts about reporting
- Reporting is NOT voluntary, and NOT reporting can result in penalties or fees.
- Reporting laws apply to any legal entity, business, nonprofit, corporation, etc.
- Reporting is NOT a one-time process. Your business must report annually.
- Businesses are only the custodians of unclaimed property and therefore cannot keep the property as revenue.
